THE BIGGEST INTERNATIONAL EVENT OF KYOKUSHIN-KAN IN 2007

I OPEN INTERNACIONAL KYOKUSHIN-KAN IN SPAIN

COPA ROYAMA

Russian Emil Dzhafarov of Kyokushin-kan Triumphs

-----------------------------

On December 15 2007 the I Open of Kyokushin-kan in Spain took place in San Adrián de Besós, Barcelona.  The success was absolute.

The Sports Pavilion, headquarters of the Barcelona Olympics for the weightlifting competition, was filled with Kyokushin enthusiasts, loyal followers either of the sport or of their colleagues or “senseis”.

Though the notice had only appeared on the Web page of Ibero American “dojos” and European countries had been invited, applications overflowed all expectations and only Hungary and Italy did not apply to participate.  There were inscriptions from Germany, Austria,  Belarus, France, Georgia, Poland, and Ukraine, as well as  from Algeria, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Japan, and Morocco.  And of course from Spain, where participants from other organizations such as IFK, Budokai, Satori, Olimpic-2, Gali, and Mawashi also registered, aside from fighters from Kyokushin-kan proceeding from the Kyokukan, Bushido, Forum Gym, and Madrid dojos.  Sensei Ricardo Gómez of Kyokukan of Barcelona was the person in charge of coordinating everything successfully.

For reasons unrelated to the organizers, some countries could not arrive to Barcelona in time to be able to participate in this event.

The divisions by weight categories were four: less than 65kg, less than 75kg, less than 85kg, and over 85kg.  The one with most athletes was the “- 75kg” one, and the total number of participants summed 63 karatekas.

The level was excellent, each country had sent their best athletes to demonstrate their efforts, training, and sportive ability.

The combats took place until the semifinals with 3 minutes of decision, without pauses, except for the speech of the President of Kyokushin-kan Spain and the demonstration of katas led by the youth sections and the “tameshiwari” in the middle of the afternoon.

The extraordinary preparation of the Russian karatekas was decisive enough to win in three of the four divisions.  Amongst them and the other fighters, the most outstanding was Emil Dzhafarov of Kyokushin-kan, who achieved four trophies: first place in his category of less than 75 kg., fastest KO (20 seconds), most number of wazaaris, and prize to the best competitor.  Amongst the Spaniards the best was Jonathan Redondo of Satori.

Speech of the President of Kyokushin-kan Spain,  shihan José Antonio Millán:

Osu!

Today is a great day for all of us for being the First Open International of the Kyokushin-kan that is held in Spain.  It is an especially important day for me as my dream of 40 years ago – when I came to Spain with the first black belt ever in this country - has come true.  I was not allowed to teach karate in public, thus, I did so in private.  And today I am able to see the fruit of the effort of those days.  The Kyokushin Karate that Maestro Oyama created has expanded throughout the world.  Kyokushin has no frontiers.  Today somebody will win, from this city or another.  The important thing is that the best ones will win.

This is what all of us wish, and also do our Kancho Royama and our Vice-kancho Hiroshige in their greeting to all the members of the Kyokushin-kan and other organizations of Kyokushin here present.

This championship has been able to be held thanks to:

-          you competitors

-          the organizers and collaborators, in particular

the Diputacio de Barcelona

the Ajuntament de Sant Adria de Besos

and the Federación Catalana de Karate

- and of course, the presence of all of you spectators.

Thank you very much.  Osu!
